Shooting Script

Shot 1 – Medium Shot of      Nina sat in the bathroom alone. She looks very upset, confused and isolated. She is positioned sat up against the bath with her head in her hands. She takes a deep breath and starts to look around. It then cuts.

Shot 2 – Cut from last shot into a close up of Nina’s face. She looks anxious and worried. She sits her head back into her hands. Cut to shot 3.

Shot 3 – Cut to medium shot of Nina. She runs her hands through her hair, shakes her head and begins to stand up. Cut to shot 4

Shot 4 - Nina shuts her eyes and takes a deep breath and looks at the pregnancy test (eye line match) on the toilet seat. Cut to shot 5

Shot 5 – CU of pregnancy test on the toilet seat. Cut to shot 6.

Shot 6/7 – M-L/S Nina picks it up to look at the result, the camera then zooms in slowly onto her face to show her reaction as it begins to sink in. Dissolve to shot 7- Overlapping footage - Nina begins to fall to the floor in disbelief.

- The camera then cuts several times to Nina in different positions in the bathroom, to convey time passing and her disbelief at the result-

I will use a AC/DC T-shirt for the montage as Nina is Literally on a 'High way to Hell'
Also it reflect her teenage rebellion, post the party and the run- in with her father.

 

I will also need to purchase a pregnancy test in order to show the audience the situation Nina

is in; there is no dialogue. It will also be more realistic and conventional. 

Synopsis

Overview of the Film
The film itself is about a young girl called Nina and the problems she faces during her teenage years at college. Nina is a very popular girl and seen as 'miss perfect', all the boys fancy her and all the girls envy her. Little do they know what happens behind the scenes.
Amy lives in a broken home with her alcoholic abusive father and self-obsessed mother, who is never there, though she would tell you she is. After a run-in with her father one night, Nina attends a party in order to drown her sorrows. Nina gets very drunk and ends up in bed with a boy from her college, Nina falls pregnant. In the end she confides in a teacher she thinks she can trust to help her when in fact she makes things worse by phoning home saying she is 'worried' about Nina.

Sequence I will show
The sequence I am going to create is where Nina finds out she is pregnant and how it starts to sink in. There will be little dialogue and will reflect Nina's state of mind at the time through the editing and cinematography. I intend to put a wash effect on the whole piece tinted slightly green and drain it of some colour; it will be set mainly in a bathroom.  I will dress my actress Amy (Nina) in an oversized AC/DC t-shirt and have her hair a mess and minimal makeup; however I will have untidy eye make-up to interpret crying.

Characters

Characters:

The Protagonist - Nina/17/Female/Student - Blonde died hair, very popular amongst her peers but behind closed doors her life is far from envious. Her father (who will not appear in the sequence I am going to create) is an abusive alcoholic. Her Mother (who will also not be appearing in the sequence) is self-obsessed and is absent in Nina's life.

This is an image of Amy who will be playing Nina.
I decided to ask Amy to play the role knowing how
good and confident she is at acting infront of a camera
and because I trust her and I know I can rely on her.

Influences

Genre - Teen Drama

Films that are of the genre ‘drama’ usually tackle very serious issues which portray realistic characters, settings and situations; this is verisimilitude which is the appearance or semblance of truth. More often than not dramas do not focus on special-effects, comedy, or action. The drama genre tends to deal with ‘of the time’ issues for example racism, drugs, religion, politics and illness etc. Through time the conventions of drama have altered in many different ways. These conventions are the setting, plot and characters. The main factor which has been a dominant force during the changes of conventions has been the society. The society present during the time in which a play was written had a direct influence on the plot and characters. This is because drama is defined as a representation of life. There are elements of drama in many films and drama has a lot of sub-genres such as romantic drama, period drama and crime drama. Voyeurism is also an aspect of drama as audiences like to engage in other people’s life to gain pleasure. Urban dramas, which was a new type of drama after the 1980’s, deals with reality but is defined by the use of drugs, guns and violence.
There are two main parts to the narrative structure of drama. Which are the story where we see what happens and to whom it happens to and then the discourse -how the story unfolds. They go by a cause and effect sequence where we see development of the characters which is ultimately what creates the drama. There is a lot of character depth opposed to other films because conventionally drama’s also present issues in such ways that will emotionally move or touch the audience and will also give them an opportunity to empathise with characters. They will do this by using non-diegetic sound tracks to fit the certain scene. They will also do this by the use of cinematography and mise-en-scene. For example the use of over the shoulder shots and shot reverse shot to show conversation between characters and character perspective shots to make the audience feel more involved in the scene and in order for it to look more realistic. The uses of close-ups are a must in the drama genre so the audience can see the characters facial expressions and to make them look more exaggerated.
The codes and conventions of the teen film genre vary depending on the cultural context of the film. Teen drama is very dynamic as it reflects society and society is constantly changing. Mainly, however, they can include proms, alcohol, illegal substances, and college, losing one's virginity, relationships, social groups and cliques.
Heightened emotion is a man feature of teen-drama so the audience can relate to the teenage angst of the characters and is illustrated with close-ups and character development.  The major focus is obviously on teenage characters. The genre was relatively non-existent for the first 45 years of television as the ‘teenager’ was and up and coming rage due to rock ‘n’ roll. It came into prominence in the early 1990s, especially with the popularity of the series Beverly Hills, 90210. After the show became a success, television writers and producers realized the potential for this new genre to reach out to a previously ignored demographic. In the past, most series with a focus on teenagers had been sitcoms, while adolescents in drama series were usually part of a larger ensemble that included adults and children. This was because issues that teenagers was facing where not spoken about, like drugs, sex and teen pregnancy, however now to try and overcome these issues they are portrayed in a media text to hopefully overcome them. 

An example of a teen-drama storyline is in East Enders when the character of Stacey finds out she is pregnant, she acts as if everything is okay but behind the scenes it is not – like in my storyline (Blog post – Influences).
Skins is thee TV show for Teen drama aimed at teens. It shows the life of around 10 ten teenagers as they go through life. Skins is also social realist which is a feature of British Teen-Dramas (also known as kitchen sink drama) as they intend to be as realistic and as close to reality as possible in order to convey the issues in which feature in them. Its controversial storylines have explored issues such as dysfunctional families, mental illness (such as eating disorders), adolescent sexuality, substance abuse and death.

Ideas

• Amy Meanwell is going to play the main character of Nina. She has experience in acting and I know I can rely on her.
• The Genre of my film is Teen drama
• The conventions of this drama I will post in a later post, once I have studied and put thought into which ones I want to use.
• The cinematography will include canted angles because it connotes something being wrong and close-ups to show clear emotions of the characters
• The editing will include, slowing certain parts down to reflect Nina's state of mind at the time she finds out she is pregnant
• Mise-en-scene will include a girls bedroom which wil feature broken objects to reflect her broken home and abusive father, a bathroom for the 'i'm pregnant' scene
• I will drain the colour from the film in order to reflect Nina's state of mind, however the scenes where she is at college there would be colour as at college she leads this 'perfect' life, this will show the contrast.

I have decided to create a short sequence from an imgaginary film called 'Be my Baby'.
It is of the teen-drama genre and will feature all the conventions that make it up. It will deal with issues that this generation of teenagers have to face.
